Highly Skilled Professional Visa Strategy
Points calculation and maximizing preferential treatment
The Highly Skilled Professional visa is a preferential status obtained through a points system (70 points or more). Benefits include relaxed permanent residency requirements (as short as 1 year) and the ability to engage in multiple activities simultaneously. In 2023, J-Skip (permanent residency in as little as 1 year at 80+ points) and J-Find (job hunting for top overseas university graduates) were newly established.
Who this is for: Foreign nationals with high-level professional knowledge, technical skills, or management ability — such as researchers, IT engineers, executives, lawyers, or doctors — who score 70 points or more.
Latest Law Amendments
J-Skip (Special Highly Skilled Professional): Those with 80+ points or annual income of ¥20M+ in the Highly Skilled Professional 1 category can apply for permanent residency after just 1 year. J-Find (Future Creation Talent): A designated activity allowing graduates of top 100 world universities (THE, etc.) within 5 years of graduation to stay up to 2 years for job hunting or business preparation. Both established in April 2023.
Case-by-Case Review Points & Strategies
Case 1: Technical Category (1-b) With 70+ Points
Low RiskSituation
An IT engineer or researcher accumulates points for education, work history, annual income, and qualifications to reach 70 or more
Strategy
Pre-calculate your score using the Ministry of Justice points table. Maximize points for education (PhD=30, master's=20, bachelor's=10), work history, annual income, and bonus points (JLPT N1=15 points, etc.).
Key Point: Aiming for 80 points rather than just 70 enables application for permanent residency in as little as 1 year via J-Skip. Do not overlook bonus points (Japanese university graduate, exam pass, innovation promotion, etc.).
Case 2: Building Points Up From Below 70
ModerateSituation
Currently around 65–69 points and a few more points away from reaching 70
Strategy
① Obtain JLPT certification (N1: +15 points, N2: +10 points). ② Obtain qualifications such as IT Passport or Fundamental IT Engineer Exam (+5–10 points). ③ Negotiate a salary increase (annual income in the ¥4–6M range shifts points significantly). ④ Complete a master's program at a Japanese university (+10 points).
Key Point: Work backwards from your target timeline and plan to apply in 6–12 months. Recommend consulting a specialist to ensure no points are overlooked.
Common Mistakes & Pitfalls
Errors in point calculation (miscalculating income, missing qualification points, etc.) can reveal insufficient requirements after application. Always confirm using the Ministry of Justice's official points table before applying.
After changing to a Highly Skilled Professional visa, significantly changing the nature of activities (e.g., technical to management) may require a new status change or renewal application. Confirm in advance before changing roles.
