Foreign nationals conducting education/research at higher education institutions like universities need the 'Professor' status; those teaching at elementary/junior/senior high schools or language schools need the 'Instructor' status. Case 1: Full-Time Lecturer / Associate Professor at University (Professor Visa)

After obtaining a PhD abroad, hired as an assistant professor at a Japanese university

Strategy

Prepare the doctoral degree certificate (with certified translation), appointment notice, employment contract, and a hiring certificate issued by the university. Universities often support the application process. A research record (list of publications) is advantageous in the review.

Key Point: The 'Professor' visa targets those with outstanding knowledge and experience in academic, artistic, economic, and other fields. It may apply not only to university professors, associate professors, lecturers, and assistant professors, but also to senior researchers at research institutes.

Case 2: ALT (Assistant Language Teacher) at Public School

Situation

Working as an ALT at a public elementary or junior high school through the JET Programme or a private ALT placement agency

Strategy

For the JET Programme, local governments and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs support the application, so the individual's burden is light. For private ALT placement, the agency often handles the visa application. A bachelor's degree or above and native or near-native English proficiency are required.

Key Point: ALTs work on an 'Instructor' visa. However, working at language schools (private English conversation schools, etc.) often falls under 'Engineer/Humanities (International Services)' rather than 'Instructor.' The correct residence status varies by type of institution (public school vs. private), so verification is needed.

Common Mistakes & Pitfalls

For part-time lecturers, if weekly working hours are short, it may be difficult to obtain a 'Professor' or 'Instructor' visa. If multiple schools are held and a total of 30+ hours of work is expected, gather employment certificates from all employers.
